The first two projects are designed to introduce students to design language and spacial concerns through the use of easily accessible and manipulable materials.
Project 1 explores line, space, and volume with the construction of a shoe out of wire at 1:1 scale. The goal of this project is to capture the characteristics, gesture, and size of the shoe through manipulation of the material and line quality.
Project 2 looks at geometric form, the golden section, and proportion. Students are introduced to polyhedral structures, planar concerns, and the work of artists such as Sol LeWitt, Shannon Goff, and Lee Bontecou. Terms such as balance, symmetry, and structure are discussed.
